Hmm, this doesn't seem to work for me anymore -- it USED to work (and was awesome), but then I think Apple upgraded the app or something and now this approach doesn't work anymore. I'm on Snow Leopard using Pages '09 v4.1. Is there a way to "fix" the updated app again?

Since the publishing of this article the specific names and layout of the bundles inside the plist file have changed. For instance, now you have no need to go to Root, then CFBundleDocumentTypes, as it automatically opens to there. Similarly, in stead of being called CFBundleTypeRole, it is now called Role, and so if you use the pre-built plist file attached to this page you will come a cropper! I recommend doing it yourself, as it isn't too difficult, and once done works perfectly on OS X Lion. :D

Hope this helps,

I just bought a new macbook air. I really love it. I ran in to this pages -> doc -> dropbox problem. I was really hoping it might fix it, but it didn't. I am using Lion and pages 09, 4.1. I followed the instructions for "not so technically minded" and I am pretty sure I followed them correctly.

First of all, THANK YOU LEE FINDLOW for this great post! Now I can do so much more in less time! To Dai Jones: I would love my Numbers (I think you meant that instead of Excel?) and Keynote to do the same! Where can I download Property List Editor? Or to make things even easier, are there .plist files that I can download for Numbers and Keynote? I only have TextEdit... :-(

A most EXCELLENT post. Now I'm able to open files natively in both .doc and .xls and keep them that way.

This post deserves a revival!

Is there a way to open a new document and have the default save as a .doc file? I am only able to save as a .pages, but export to a .doc file.
